On Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. EST, Biomet will sponsor a live total knee replacement utilizing Signature™ patient-specific technology. This surgery will broadcast live from Crittenton Hospital in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The surgery will be performed by Jeffrey H. DeClaire, M.D., of the DeClaire Knee & Orthopaedic Institute, Rochester Hills, Michigan and moderated by Adolph V. Lombardi, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor Biomedical Engineering and Clinical Assistant Professor Orthopeadic Surgery, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.

Signature™ Personalized Patient Care utilizes patient-specific femoral and tibial positioning guides developed from MRI to offer an individualized approach to total knee replacement. The MRI provides a consistent three-dimensional data set of the patient’s anatomy which allows for mechanical axis identification. Developed for use with the Vanguard® Complete Knee System, the Signature™/Vanguard® product is the most versatile combination available. The system’s Vanguard® Knee Planning Software – the preoperative visualization and planning resource for surgeons – incorporates the Vanguard® knee’s ten femoral and nine tibial sizes, enabling a level customization never before seen. Utilizing conventional landmarks, the Signature™ system surgical technique is an intuitive approach to total knee arthroplasty incorporating traditional resection guides. In a conventional instrumented surgical technique, the full complement of instrumentation is required intraoperatively. With the Signature™ system, the result of the preoperative surgical planning is a more focused intervention with the instruments required for surgery as well as the operative plan.

Biomet, as the manufacturer of orthopedic devices, does not practice medicine and does not recommend the implants or specific surgical techniques utilized in this webcast for treatment of any specific patient. The surgical techniques demonstrated herein are utilized by Dr. DeClaire and Dr. Lombardi, Biomet consultants, for general educational purposes.
